The first series in HD for Germany

The first production for BFS: In 2008, Teamworx commissions "Klinik am Alex", the first series in HD for Germany, post-produced by BFS and graded by Philipp Horsch, who makes his debut as a colorist.

First German series in 4K – shot on RED

Insanity from the point of view of that time: but that doesn't stop BFS from accepting the series "Die Bergretter" in 2009 and with it the first German series in 4K, shot on RED.

Unbeaten to date: UHD HDR

It takes two years from research (beginning in 2015) to implementation, then BFS has Germany's, probably even Europe's first broadcast tape in UHD HDR ready for delivery.

How did you get started with color correction?

By chance, I slipped into it. I was working as a post-supervisor in a German production company, and at an opportune moment I started my own post-production house. During the first project – one of the first German TV series in HD – I was confronted with color for the first time. Since I couldn't find a colorist until the start of the project, I decided to do it myself. What can I say? It was love at first sight. Since then, not one day has gone by without spending time on my passion for color.

Tell us about your company. What does a typical day at work look like?

"Another important part of our work is research. For example, eight years ago we post-produced the first German series in 4K, shot on RED."

We manage our projects from start to finish, we confer with the production teams even before the shoot to discuss the choice of the camera and to synchronize the workflow for editing and mastering. We support the DoPs on the set, create the dailies, guide the editing and of course we then correct the color and create the final master.

What types of content are you working with these days? What excites you about these projects?

Right now, we're working on four mainstream commercial series. Sometimes it's quite a challenge, especially when you're a colorist working with a new DoP. Among other projects, we are working on the successful German TV series "Der Bergdoktor" and "Die Bergretter" – both shot in 4K and on RED. You have got to remember that these formats thrive on stunning images, and creating them can be quite complex, because they are shot at high altitude in the Alps. Grading is quite challenging, because you have got to deal with frequent weather changes and light changes on these sets.
